CMI Level 3 Diploma in First Line Management

Course Information:

This programme is designed to meet the needs of existing or aspiring supervisors and first line managers, and is intended for those people who need to maintain and develop the effectiveness and efficiency of the operations for which they are responsible by means of:

  • Motivating and developing the people who work in the team or department
  • Fostering effective communication
  • Developing a sense of team/ corporate identity

This qualification emphasises the need for the development of personal management capabilities as a starting point. It focuses then on people and operational management principles and practices, and the development of a basic appreciation of resource control and use. Across all of this it also encompasses the need to make effective use of information in the decision-making process.

The programme concentrates on the practical application of management theory and principles in the context of the developing first line manager, thus providing a foundation for continuing professional and personal development in management.

The qualification consists of seven units;

  • Personal development as a first line manager
  • Resource planning
  • Meeting stakeholder needs
  • Managing and communicating information
  • Developing individuals and teams
  • Recruitment and selection
  • Maintaining quality standards

Entry Requirements

It is expected that you will already be at Certificate in Team Leading, or equivalent standard qualification before commencing this programme. If you do not hold the Certificate in Team Leading, your management experience at and around this level may be taken into account. Entry onto the programme is via an interview, following completion of an application form.

Assessment:

The Diploma is awarded to candidates who successfully complete the seven unit based assignments.

36 weeks
Monday/Tuesday 5.30pm – 9.00pm
Starts 08.09.08

The course is offered on a flexible blended open learning basis which involves attending workshops about once every 3 or 4 weeks over three academic terms. The guided learning hours recommended by the Chartered Management Institute are 140 hours; this is based on the time that might actually be spent by a candidate in completing the programme.

Progression:

On successful completion of the L3 Diploma in First Line Management you may wish to progress to the L5 Diploma in Leadership and Management which will enable you to further develop your operational management skills and enhance your career opportunities.
